Protecting a Vital Ecosystem

The Aberdares Conservation Area is one of Kenya’s most crucial water catchments, supplying water to millions of people. Yet, this lifeline faces increasing threats from deforestation, invasive species, and the effects of climate change. To safeguard it, the Community Sustainable Development Empowerment Programme (COSDEP), in partnership with PELUM Kenya and other organizations, is implementing the Aberdare Watershed Management Programme—a two-year initiative focused on sustainable resource management.

Shaping Policies for a Sustainable Future

Unlike short-term conservation efforts, this programme focuses on long-lasting change through policy development. By working with local authorities across four counties, the initiative is shaping policies on wetlands and riparian area conservation, stormwater management, control of invasive species, and responsible quarrying practices. These frameworks ensure that environmental protection becomes a legal and actionable priority.

Community-Centered Conservation

At the heart of this initiative are the communities living around the Aberdares. Through training, awareness campaigns, and participation in policy discussions, residents are becoming active custodians of their environment. They are learning how sustainable land-use practices can both protect natural resources and improve their own livelihoods.
